How to Win a Chargeback: The Evidence Checklist

Fighting a chargeback is called representment. You send evidence to the bank showing the charge was valid. The key is matching your evidence to the reason code, and responding before the deadline.

Evidence by dispute reason

"I didn't make this purchase" (fraud)

  • AVS and CVV match results
  • IP address, device and email used
  • Previous undisputed orders from the same customer
  • Delivery to the cardholder's billing address

"I never received it"

  • Carrier tracking showing delivery
  • Signature or photo proof of delivery
  • Customer emails confirming receipt

"Not as described"

  • Product description and photos from your site at the time of sale
  • Your refund policy and proof it was shown at checkout
  • Customer messages and your replies

"I cancelled"

  • Your cancellation policy and where it is shown
  • Proof the customer did not cancel, or cancelled after billing
  • Renewal reminder emails you sent

Tips that raise your win rate

  1. Respond early — don't wait for the last day.
  2. Keep it short and organized: a one-page summary plus exhibits.
  3. Only fight disputes you can prove; refund the rest.
