Selling online without being treated like a risk

If you sell online, by phone or by invoice, underwriters look at your business a little harder. That is not a judgment — card-not-present sales simply carry more dispute risk. A few things make a real difference.

Make your website do the talking

  • Clear product or service descriptions with prices.
  • Visible refund, cancellation and shipping policies.
  • A real phone number, email and business address.
  • Secure checkout (https) and terms of service.

Be specific about how you bill

Subscriptions, deposits, payment plans and pre-orders are all fine — when they are explained. Say how often you bill, how customers cancel, and how long until delivery.

Keep delivery times short

Long gaps between payment and delivery raise risk. If you take deposits or pre-orders, say so up front.

Send clean documents

Owner ID, a voided check or bank letter, and recent bank statements. If you already process cards, recent processing statements help a lot.

Plan for disputes from day one

Online sellers benefit most from dispute alerts, which give you a chance to refund before a chargeback lands.
