Why isn't an approved payment instant money?
Approval only confirms the customer's card is good for the amount. The money still has to move through settlement: your transactions are grouped into a batch, sent to the card networks, and the funds are then routed through your acquiring bank to your account. That movement takes time — typically one to two business days after the batch closes.
What is a batch, and why does it matter?
A batch is the day's transactions submitted together for settlement. Most gateways batch automatically once a day, often overnight. The timing of your batch close sets the clock: a sale that lands just after the batch closes waits for the next day's batch before it even starts settling. If fast funding matters to you, check when your batch closes.
What can delay funding?
- Weekends and holidays — settlement runs on business days, so a Friday sale may not land until Monday or Tuesday.
- A new account — early transactions can take longer while the account establishes.
- A rolling reserve — on some accounts a percentage is held temporarily and released later.
- Risk review — an unusually large or irregular transaction may be held for a check.
Can you get funded faster?
Some processors offer next-day or same-day funding on eligible accounts, sometimes for a fee. Whether it is available depends on your processor, your account history, and your risk profile. It is worth asking about if cash flow is tight — but a clean processing record is usually what unlocks the faster options over time.
