Merchant Onboarding Specialist
Review merchant applications before they reach the bank, so files go in complete and come back approved.
About the role
Most merchant applications that get declined were not bad businesses. They were incomplete files — a voided cheque that did not match the legal name, ownership percentages that did not add up, a business description too vague to categorise.
This role catches all of that before the sponsor bank ever sees it. You review incoming applications, check the documents, chase what is missing, and decide which underwriting desk a file should go to given the industry and the risk profile.
You are not the underwriter and you do not approve anything. You are the reason the approval comes back in 24 hours instead of six days.
What you will be doing
- Review incoming merchant applications for completeness and consistency
- Verify business details, ownership structure and settlement banking
- Request missing documents from merchants and agents and follow up until they arrive
- Assess which underwriting desk suits a file based on industry and risk profile
- Submit complete files and track them through to a decision
- Keep the agent or sales rep updated so they are not chasing you
- Maintain notes in the back office so anybody can pick up a file
